As your City Councillor for Ward 4 it is my responsibility to ensure that your voice is heard at the municipal level on all issues including: Property taxes, parks and recreation, bylaws, the protection of green spaces, and transportation issues such as snowplowing, roads and trails.
This first term on City Council has taught me that old practices die hard and that a new way of thinking and listening to the public are vitally important to how we build the City that we all want to live in.
During this first term on Council I have met often with residents on a wide variety of issues. I heard your concerns about the student housing in the Conestoga College area and we have been able to increase our bylaw and policing presence but there is more we can do. I struggled with many of you on the issue of infill buildings throughout the community; we need to improve this process. I supported the expansion of our trails systems and although it was not immediately accepted by some residents the majority of you have told me that you really love using them.
I have cycled throughout the community and have met many of you on the trails, at the Community Center and Library, in our schools and at our retail sites. You have told me what you wanted and what you hoped we as an expanded Council could do. We have made some changes but have a long way to go. I have a strong interest in being responsible with taxpayer's dollars as well as considering how our decisions impact our community and our environment. To do that we need to keep engaging our community in as many ways as we can. Through public meetings, social media or just one-on-one conversations. I welcomed your input because what you tell me is important to all of us.
As your Ward Councillor, it is my responsibility to keep you informed of where your tax dollars are being spent as well as staying fiscally responsible. Feel free to contact me either on Facebook, Twitter, through email or phone. I promise to get back to you and listen to what you have to tell me.
Yvonne immigrated as a young child from the Netherlands. After many of years of moving from city to city Yvonne’s family settled into the Kitchener area. Yvonne has been married to Manny for over 30 years after meeting at Conestoga College where they both graduated from the Business Administration program. They raised their 3 children: Joshua, Ashley and Jordan in Kitchener becoming involved in a wide variety of sports with their children. During those years Yvonne returned to school to complete her Para-Educator diploma applying her education at a number of schools in the community working with special needs children. Her desire to make a difference in the community led her to join numerous groups that included: School Councils, Community Relations Committee's, the Parent Advisory group for an Air Cadet Squadron, CradleLink, Friends of Hidden Valley, and the Grand River Environmental Network.
While fighting to preserve Strasburg Creek from the impacts of development and sitting on the Environmental Advisory Committee for 6 years, her interest also turned toward Environmental issues. Yvonne sees that education of children and the preservation of the environment go hand-in-hand with being stewardly with our environment. It is also extremely important to balance this with fiscal responsibility and understanding that some members of the community struggle with the day-to-day task of providing for their families.
As a resident of Ward 4 for over 20 years Yvonne has been concerned about tax increases and feels they need to be aligned with the inflation rate. The taxpayers in this Ward need to have a clear understanding of how the money is disbursed. As your Ward Councillor, Yvonne will continue to keep you informed of how your tax dollars are spent as well as work to keep City spending in check.
Yvonne's interests include:
- Cross Country Skiing
- Long Distance Walking
